A military veteran has started a new mobile flooring franchise in the Central Valley, using his background in both the armed forces and various industries to launch the business.

Mike Swope, who served over 11 years as a communications officer in the U.S. Army National Guard, opened his Floor Coverings International franchise in July. The business brings premium flooring options directly to customers’ homes through its mobile service model.

Swope’s career includes experience as a data analyst, roles in startup operations, work as a financial information systems analyst for Pacific Gas & Electric Co., and leadership positions at companies focused on restaurant logistics technology and environmental projects. He also has hands-on knowledge from investing in real estate and operating a handyman business.

His decision to enter the flooring industry was influenced by these experiences and by observing market trends such as the increasing popularity of vinyl flooring in homes built on concrete slabs throughout the region.

“The appeal of the franchise is that the business model is well established,” Swope said. “Floor Coverings International matched the leadership style I really enjoyed, and mimicked what I was used to in the military. Having that structure, doing things right and being on time are all the things that resonated me.”

The initial investment required to open a Floor Coverings International franchise ranges from $250,000 to $400,000 depending on how the business is structured, according to Swope.

Since launching this summer, Swope said he is adapting to visiting customers’ homes, learning about product offerings, and understanding company processes. He recently hired an office manager who is also a Marine Corps veteran. Both are working together to define tasks needed for efficient operation.

Looking ahead, Swope plans to hire two additional employees—a full-time salesperson and a project manager—by next year’s end.

Regarding installation services, Swope noted that most flooring companies rely on third-party contractors rather than hiring installers internally.

“How we function as a franchise and how we provide a five-star service to our customers is by excelling on the communication part, and also making sure the customers can trust us showing up on time, and do the right thing,” he said.

Swope pointed out that advances in production technology have led not only to renewed interest in laminate but also affected other products like industrial carpeting, vinyl flooring and tile.

To promote his new venture locally, Swope participates in community events and home shows. He aims to sponsor youth groups soon while exploring opportunities with organizations focused on animal welfare. In addition, he collaborates with local chapters of national charities such as The Salvation Army for sports activities involving area youth.

Swope expressed hope that his business will become an integral part of community life over time.
