Lifestyle blogger Carrie Rad recently completed a road trip through Northern California’s Shasta Cascade region, sharing her experiences and favorite destinations from Siskiyou County to Redding.
“Exploring all over California was a dream of mine,” said Rad, who grew up in Nevada before moving to Los Angeles for fashion studies. She highlighted hiking the Bunny Flat Trail with its view of Mount Shasta and visiting Stewart Mineral Springs as top activities, although she noted that Stewart Mineral Springs is now permanently closed.
Rad described the area as “naturally stunning” and “truly a hidden gem,” noting how untouched much of the region remains. She said, “Everywhere you go you’re surrounded by beautiful landscapes. I really loved the small town vibes I felt wherever we explored in the Shasta Cascade area.”
Among scenic destinations, Rad named Lava Beds National Monument and the drive up to Bunny Flats trailhead as standouts. “The Lava Beds is massive and unique with lava rocks everywhere you look. On the drive up to Bunny Flats you’re surrounded by pine trees—it’s a magical drive,” she said.
She recommended exploring caves at Lava Beds National Monument, especially Skull Cave at sunset for its visual effects: “Try to arrive as the sun is setting; the sun plays on the walls of the cave and it’s truly a gorgeous sight to see.”
Burney Falls was another highlight for Rad: “This waterfall left me speechless. It is a very easy trek in so I didn’t expect it to be so massive and captivating. I highly recommend making the stop on your way to or from the airport in Redding.”
For food, Rad suggested The Wheelhouse in Dunsmuir for breakfast options including dirty chai lattes and biscuits with gravy.
She also praised local accommodations for their convenience to natural attractions. The Bridgehouse Bed & Breakfast in Redding stood out during her stay, though it is now permanently closed. She recalled, “Janelle and her husband were so kind and made me the most delicious breakfast before I traveled home. I will definitely be staying there again next time I’m in Redding.”
Rad summed up her trip as one filled with joy, saying a photo of her jumping captured that spirit well.
