California is home to a variety of bars and restaurants that have played memorable roles in well-known movies. Visitors can experience these iconic locations, many of which continue to operate as popular establishments.
In Sacramento, Club Raven—also known as “The Dirty Bird”—made an appearance in the 2017 film Lady Bird, although the main character does not enter the bar due to her age in the story.
On the Sonoma coast, The Tides Wharf & Restaurant was featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 thriller The Birds. The owner reportedly allowed filming at the location in exchange for a small speaking role. Today, it is known for its seafood and water views, along with regular events such as piano nights and crab feeds.
San Francisco’s Tosca Cafe appears in Basic Instinct (1992), where Michael Douglas’ character visits after falling off the wagon. The cafe is also notable for its signature “House Cappuccino 1919,” a drink with Armagnac, bourbon, and chocolate ganache. When Tosca Cafe faced closure in 2013, actor Sean Penn reportedly helped keep it open.
The Hitching Post II in Buellton gained recognition from Sideways (2004), serving as one of the main spots where Paul Giamatti’s character criticizes Merlot wine. The restaurant is popular for Santa Maria-style barbecue and features an extensive wine list including several Pinot Noirs.
Burbank’s Smoke House has appeared in both La La Land (2017) and Argo (2013). Located near Warner Bros. Studios since 1946, it has attracted Hollywood figures like Bob Hope and George Clooney. Its menu includes traditional items such as cheese-garlic bread and steak.
The Dresden in Los Angeles was featured prominently in Swingers (1996). Marty & Elayne continue to perform there several nights a week, maintaining a tradition established decades ago.

The Prince Bar & Restaurant in Koreatown served as a meeting spot for characters played by Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson in Chinatown (1974). It has also been used for scenes from television series like Mad Men and New Girl.
Downtown Los Angeles’ Cicada Restaurant & Club is known for its scene with Julia Roberts launching escargot during dinner with Richard Gere in Pretty Woman (1990). While escargot is no longer on the menu, guests can enjoy live music events alongside classic cocktails.
Paco’s Tacos Cantina was where Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger’s characters had their first date in Jerry Maguire (1996). Visitors can sit by the aquarium seen onscreen or try regional Mexican dishes paired with margaritas.
Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace was originally built as part of movie sets funded by Roy Rogers and Gene Autry for use in westerns during the mid-20th century. Now operating as a real bar near Joshua Tree National Park, it regularly hosts musical acts across genres.
Finally, Kansas City Barbecue in San Diego was used for key scenes—including Tom Cruise singing—in Top Gun (1986). The establishment remains open today with food offerings such as brisket and ribs alongside memorabilia related to both local military history and the film itself.
