San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area offer a variety of family-friendly attractions that combine education with hands-on activities. Monet Hambrick, also known as The Traveling Child, recently visited several locations in the region with her two daughters and shared her experiences on the California Now Podcast.

One of their stops was The Tech Interactive in San Jose. This science center received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service in 2015, which is considered the highest honor for museums and cultural institutions in the United States. The Tech offers STEM-based activities suitable for all ages, such as building robots with real sensors and exploring digital art through virtual reality labs. For older children, there are programs like Cyber Detectives that focus on internet safety.

Nearby, families can visit the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose. This museum features interactive exhibits designed especially for younger children. Kids can play with a fire truck exhibit or explore an international food market. There are areas like the Wonder Cabinet for toddlers to touch different textures and a dedicated Crawl Space where babies can participate in scheduled activities.

A short drive south leads to Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, about 72 miles from San Jose. The aquarium is home to over 35,000 sea creatures across 200 exhibits. Supported by the Packard Foundation since its founding, it has expanded to include marine research initiatives through its research institute and runs conservation programs focused on marine wildlife.

In San Francisco’s waterfront area lies Pier 39, one of the city’s most popular destinations. Visitors can see views of landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island while exploring attractions like Aquarium of the Bay, which showcases local aquatic life including moon jellies and sevengill sharks. Families can also enjoy behind-the-scenes tours at the aquarium or dine at seafood restaurants such as Swiss Louis Italian and Seafood Restaurant or Pier Market.

Another major destination is California Academy of Sciences located within Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This institution combines an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest biodome, natural history museum, and research center under one roof. Notable exhibits include Steinhart Aquarium’s Twilight Zone display and Morrison Planetarium’s astronomy shows. The Academy emphasizes sustainability through eco-friendly operations and animal breeding programs.

These five destinations highlight educational opportunities available to families traveling in Northern California while providing interactive experiences suitable for various age groups.
