A prominent figure in Fresno’s architectural community, Edwin Speight Darden, Jr., died on Wednesday, September 3 at the age of 80. Darden was known for his role in building Darden Architects into one of the Central Valley’s leading firms.

Darden was born in Pocatello, Idaho on December 19, 1944. He joined the family business after earning a degree in architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The firm was founded by his father, Edwin Speight Darden, Sr., in 1959 and was originally named Edwin S. Darden and Associates.

After college, Darden moved to Fresno with his wife Janice Lane—whom he met while attending school—to work alongside his father. Together they expanded the company into what became the largest architectural firm in the region under the name Darden Architects.

Throughout his career, Darden contributed to hospital and educational planning across the Central Valley. His projects included designing many Clovis Unified schools as well as Madera Community College, Clovis Community College, and facilities for Fresno State baseball and softball.

He held leadership roles within professional organizations including serving as president of the San Joaquin chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Darden is survived by his wife Janice Lane; daughters Holly Smith and Brooke Bergman; son Edwin Speight Darden IV; sisters Judy Hulstrom and Diane Morgan; sons- and daughters-in-law; and several grandchildren.

“He is remembered for his work ethic, moral character, infectious laugh, and sense of humor,” according to the obituary. “He was the life of every party and a stranger to no one. Ed’s life was a celebration of family as a husband, father, grandfather.”

A celebration of life is scheduled for Friday, September 12 at Northwest Church at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the family home.
