Batari, an 8-year-old female Malayan tiger, has arrived at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo from the Tulsa Zoo in Oklahoma. She is now part of the Kingdoms of Asia exhibit, where visitors can see her in her new environment.
Batari will serve as a companion to Penari, the zoo’s male Malayan tiger. However, since tigers are generally solitary, guests will often see them in separate enclosures.
The introduction of Batari and her pairing with Penari is coordinated through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP). This program is designed to support conservation efforts and maintain genetic diversity among endangered species.
Malayan tigers remain critically endangered, with fewer than 150 individuals estimated to be living in the wild. The SSP program contributes to the stability of the species by overseeing breeding and educational initiatives.
