The Fresno City Council has officially designated October as “Manufacturing Month” for the second consecutive year. The proclamation was made during a council meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16, and an honor was presented to the Fresno County Economic Development Corp (EDC).
National Manufacturing Month is recognized across the United States to highlight the manufacturing industry and provide educational opportunities for students, parents, and educators to learn about careers in the sector.
Several local leaders were recognized during the council meeting, including Fresno EDC CEO Will Oliver, EDC Vice President of Workforce Development Chris Zeitz, PNM Co. machine shop Director of Operations Mario Persicone, and Fast Trak Metal Fabrication owner Ferol Garcia.
Councilmember Nelson Esparza presented the proclamation, stating, “Manufacturing is not only an industry that just builds products. It builds futures for our working families and for Fresno as a whole.” He emphasized that manufacturing has long been important in the Central Valley and provides pathways to well-paying jobs for people throughout the region.
Esparza also highlighted the role of the Fresno County EDC in supporting local manufacturers. He said the organization helps businesses grow, innovate, and remain in the community.
Will Oliver noted the importance of collaboration between local government and economic organizations. “Fresno can compete globally, not just because of the land and location, but because of the people and our collaborative spirit. Recruitment is half the battle though,” Oliver said.
Industry estimates from the Manufacturing Institute suggest there could be 2.1 million unfilled manufacturing jobs in the United States by 2030. Manufacturing currently contributes $19.3 billion to Central Valley’s gross domestic product each year, employing 115,000 residents across the Valley, including more than 30,000 in Fresno. The Fresno EDC has played a role in creating over 9,000 jobs and generating a $1.8 billion economic impact.
