The Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission (Fresno EOC) marked its 60th anniversary and announced Steven Lewis as its new CEO during an event on Tuesday. The organization, which was established in 1965, has been focused on fostering economic growth in the region.

Steven Lewis joins Fresno EOC with over two decades of experience in the nonprofit sector. He has worked in various leadership roles, particularly within Head Start programs, and is known for encouraging collaboration and positive change. Lewis is originally from Baltimore and most recently served as president and CEO of Community Partnership for Children Development in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Reflecting on his career path, Lewis shared his approach to leadership: “This is my fourth time being a CEO,” he said. “The first time you’ve got a big head; the second time you get slapped; the third time you get fired; the fourth time you start learning. If you don’t have humility by the fourth, something’s wrong with you — you shouldn’t be in the seat.”

The anniversary event also included remarks from Oliver Baines, Chair of the Fresno EOC Board of Commissioners. Baines highlighted that while it is important to acknowledge 60 years of service, there remains significant work ahead to address poverty in the community.

“We are commemorating 60 years fighting poverty, not celebrating 60 years fighting poverty,” Baines said. “I think it’s an important distinction because we have a lot more work to do as a community and specifically as an agency.”

Fresno EOC currently operates more than 30 programs across different areas to support local residents.

“For six decades, Fresno EOC has listened to the needs of our neighborhoods and responded with programs that make a difference,” Baines added. “With Steven’s leadership, we are confident the next chapter will be one of innovation, partnership, and even greater impact.”
