Fresno Housing has secured $9.58 million from the Joe Serna Jr. Farmworker Housing Grant Program, according to a news release issued on Friday. The funding will support the second phase of La Joya Commons in Firebaugh, following the opening of its initial 68-unit phase in July.
The new phase will add 28 homes intended for families whose income comes from agricultural work. These units will be constructed in four two-story buildings that are connected to the existing development, and both phases will share amenities.
La Joya Commons is designed to offer a range of one- to four-bedroom apartments for households earning between 30% and 60% of Fresno County’s area median income.
Out of 166 applications submitted statewide, only 30 projects received funding through this program.
“This award is a tremendous recognition of the need for safe, modern, and affordable housing for agricultural workers and their families in the Central Valley,” said Tyrone Roderick Williams, CEO of Fresno Housing. “La Joya Commons Phase II will not only provide new homes but strengthen the community by connecting residents to services, youth programs and spaces where families can thrive.”
