Fresno State will begin its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with La Bienvenida, an event that welcomes new and returning Latina/o/x students, faculty, and staff. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the University Student Union balcony and The Pit.

La Bienvenida is organized by the Latina/o Faculty and Staff Association and includes performances by Mixtecos Unidos, Mariachi Orgullo de Fresno State, Danzantes de Aztlán, and Banda La Afirmativa. Attendees can also visit a resource fair and enjoy food while supplies last. For more information about this event, contact Eduardo Mundo at eduardomundo@mail.fresnostate.edu.

Several other events are planned throughout Hispanic Heritage Month at Fresno State:

On Sept. 16, Latino/a Programs and Services will host Meet Your Pueblo from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Resnick Student Union, Room 214. Students can enjoy aguas frescas while learning how to create papel picado decorations for display in the Cross Cultural and Gender Center during the month. This event is free for students. Cynthia Villalobos can be contacted for details at cynthiavillalobos@mail.fresnostate.edu.

On Sept. 18 at noon in Resnick Student Union Room 214, a Lunch & Learn Series titled “Raíces y Futuro: Latine Student Activism then, now, and beyond” will take place. This educational workshop examines the history and future of Latine/Chicanx student activism and is presented by Latino/a Programs and Services along with the Chicano and Latin American Studies Department. It is open to all members of the campus community.

A cooking class called Paws and Pans will be held on Sept. 23 at 3 p.m., led by Off-Campus Student Life in partnership with several campus organizations including Latino/a Programs and Services, Associated Students Inc., Amendola Family Student Cupboard, and CalFresh. Students can learn how to make quesadillas and taquitos in the Family Food and Science building’s teaching kitchen; space is limited to 15 participants who must sign up through social media links provided by @FresnoStateCCGC or @OCSLprogram accounts. An additional 50 ingredient bags will be available for pickup at the Amendola Family Student Cupboard for those wishing to cook at home.

The Tied Together: HHM Shirt Giveaway and Tie-dye event takes place on Sept. 25 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., where students can receive a free Hispanic Heritage Month shirt to tie-dye in front of the Kennel Bookstore’s Memorial Garden.

Another Meet Your Pueblo session is set for Oct. 7 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., offering aguas frescas alongside cultural activities related to Latine heritage.

Feria de Educación occurs on Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., providing families with resources about higher education navigation through workshops, a kid zone, campus tours, food trucks, and performances by Los Danzantes De Aztlán on Fresno State’s Maple Mall.

On Oct.13 starting at 5 p.m., there will be a Movie Night featuring “Indigenous Representation in Wakanda Forever” hosted in collaboration between Latino/a Programs & Services and American Indian Programs & Services in the Resnick Student Union WOW Lounge; discussion about Indigenous representation follows after the screening.
