Fresno State students will participate in a community service event on November 15, as part of the One-Day Service Event organized by the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning. This event is one component of the Emerging Leaders Retreat, which is hosted by Student Involvement at Fresno State. The retreat aims to help students build relationships, develop leadership skills, and contribute positively through service, networking, and activities.

Students interested in joining can register online for both the retreat and the service day. Volunteers will have the option to serve at one of three locations: Hearts and Hands at Ronald McDonald House, Dakota Eco Village, or San Joaquin River Conservancy.

Richter Center student leaders have played a key role in organizing these events, including selecting community partners and arranging food donations. For over 16 years, Fresno State has contributed more than one million hours of community service annually to California’s Central Valley.

At Ronald McDonald House, Alisa Gonzalez and Rubi Rivera will lead volunteers in autumn-themed arts and crafts activities and storage room organization. At Dakota Eco Village, led by Khushleen Khak, Prabhjot Gill, and Elizabeth Melendez, volunteers will assist with gardening tasks such as weeding and watering plants, as well as setting up Thanksgiving decorations. The Eco Village offers sustainable housing solutions while supporting residents’ educational and emotional needs to break the cycle of homelessness.

Yuna Ha and Aisley Chavez will lead efforts at San Joaquin River Conservancy Lanes Property. The San Joaquin River Conservancy is responsible for developing the San Joaquin River Parkway while conserving resources and providing recreational opportunities. Volunteers there will assist with environmental projects according to current site needs.

Each volunteer event concludes with a reflection activity facilitated by Richter Center student leaders. According to organizers: “This is a signature practice of the Richter Center, where participants connect their service experiences to personal growth and professional development.”
