Google Maps will soon use Gemini AI technology to offer a more conversational navigation experience, according to an announcement made on Wednesday. The update aims to allow users to interact with the app by speaking naturally, making it easier to receive directions and recommendations for nearby places such as restaurants, shops, or attractions.
“No fumbling required — now you can just ask,” Google stated in a blog post about the redesign.
The new features are designed to make navigation more precise by using landmarks as reference points for turns instead of traditional distance-based instructions. This hands-free approach is intended to help drivers keep their attention on the road while still receiving useful information.
Google has addressed concerns that AI chatbots like Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT sometimes generate incorrect information, known as “hallucinations.” The company said safeguards are in place to prevent the app from providing misleading directions.
Gemini will rely on data collected from about 250 million locations stored in Google Maps’ database, which includes reviews and other user-generated content accumulated over two decades. The update will be available for both iPhone and Android devices.
With more than 2 billion users worldwide, Google Maps’ integration of Gemini AI could set a new standard for digital navigation assistants. The company hopes these enhancements will demonstrate Gemini’s capabilities and help it stand out against competitors such as ChatGPT.
