Fresno’s nightlife has gained a new venue with the reopening of a well-known hookah lounge under new ownership and branding. The former Kan Zaman Hookah Lounge on North Blackstone Avenue has been relaunched as Hookah Bal, now operated by Prince Raj.
The revamped lounge is located at the intersection of Blackstone and Sierra avenues. It offers extended hours, staying open from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on weekends, in an effort to attract both regulars and newcomers looking for a late-night social spot.
“We welcome regulars and first-time patrons alike,” Raj said. “We’re transforming our lounge with relaxed music, a welcoming vibe, and later hours so people can unwind after dinner, an event, or a night out.”
Raj acquired the business from David Basha, who previously ran both the grill and lounge under one brand but now continues to operate only the neighboring Kan Zaman Grill independently. Despite separating their businesses, Basha played an important role in helping Raj transition into his new role as owner.
“I didn’t know I was going to be able to own it, so it was kind of amazing,” Raj said. “I just wanted to love what I do for a career, so it was easy.”
Raj recently moved from the Bay Area to Fresno and decided to purchase the lounge after finding its listing online. He met with Basha in early October; within weeks they completed the sale and began updating the space.
“Taking the business over has been pretty easy,” Raj said. “He’s been helpful.”
Since taking over operations, Raj has updated furnishings and introduced seasonal decorations intended to draw younger customers while maintaining appeal for long-time patrons. He is also adding more flavor options and fruit bowl hookahs for those seeking new experiences.
“I would say I would deliver more good service to modern people, to the younger people, because I’m younger myself,” he said. “More selections of flavors and more into using fruit bowls [to] kind of enhance the flavors.”
While California voters approved Proposition 31 in November 2022 banning most flavored tobacco products statewide, state law allows licensed hookah lounges that restrict entry to those over age 21 to continue selling flavored tobacco products under certain conditions.
Raj emphasized that Hookah Bal does not serve alcohol but aims to provide a relaxing environment for guests after evening activities or nights out.
