More than 60 shipping containers fell off a cargo vessel named the Mississippi at the Port of Long Beach on Tuesday morning, according to port spokesperson Art Marroquin. The incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m., with no injuries reported.
The U.S. Coast Guard stated on X that about 67 containers ended up in the water. Some of these containers reportedly landed on the STAX 2, an anti-pollution vessel attached to the side of the Mississippi designed to capture emissions.
The Port of Long Beach is located about 20 miles south of Los Angeles and is one of the country’s busiest seaports. It handles around 40% of all shipping containers entering the United States, either through its own facilities or those at the adjacent Los Angeles port.
At the time of the incident, operations at Pier G container terminal—one of six terminals at Long Beach—were temporarily halted while authorities worked to secure loose containers. Empty shipping containers can weigh between two and four metric tons (2.2 to 4.4 tons), depending on their size.
No injuries have been reported as officials continue to address the situation.
