California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed nine new members to the State Rehabilitation Council (SRC) on October 31. Among those selected is Shellena Heber, executive director of the Valley Center for the Blind, a nonprofit organization based in the Central Valley.

The SRC serves as an advisory body to the California Department of Rehabilitation. Its role is to provide guidance on programs that assist individuals with disabilities in preparing for and maintaining employment.

Heber has been chosen to serve as the council’s community rehabilitation representative. In a statement released following her appointment, Heber said: “The State Rehabilitation Council is a critical part of ensuring that Californians living with disabilities receive effective, informed, and person-centered services that meet their needs and goals. As a proud California native with a decade of experience in disability services, I see so many possibilities to improve the lives of people with disabilities in our state. I am deeply honored for the opportunity to contribute to the State Rehabilitation Council and look forward to collaborating with this esteemed group of advisors.”
