Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has reported a 42 percent reduction in methane emissions from its gas pipeline system for the year 2024, compared to levels recorded in 2015. This achievement was submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), showing that PG&E has surpassed its previous goal of a 20 percent reduction by 2025.
The original target was set in 2017 when the CPUC and California Air Resources Board (CARB) directed PG&E to reduce emissions by 20 percent below the 2015 baseline by 2025. Following this directive, PG&E voluntarily established a more ambitious goal of reaching a 45 percent reduction by 2030.
In June, PG&E provided its annual emissions data for 2024 to the CPUC. The report detailed the methods and strategies used to reach the current level of emission reductions.
“Achieving and surpassing our methane emissions reduction goal is an important milestone that highlights our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of our natural gas pipeline system. Coupled with our ongoing commitment to support the interconnection and delivery of California-produced renewable natural gas, we remain committed to achieving a net zero emissions energy system for our customers and hometowns,” said Gas Engineering Vice President Austin Hastings.
PG&E’s Climate Strategy Report describes plans for achieving a net zero emissions energy system by 2040, with an additional aim of creating a “climate positive” system by 2050.
PG&E serves over 16 million people across Northern and Central California as part of its operations as a combined natural gas and electric utility. More information about PG&E can be found at https://www.pge.com/ and https://www.pge.com/news/.
