The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is calling on the U.S. Senate to approve the Protect America’s Workforce Act, a bill intended to restore collective bargaining rights for federal workers. The legislation, known as H.R. 2550, has already been introduced in the House of Representatives by Jared Golden (D-ME) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), with bipartisan support.
IAM International President Brian Bryant sent letters to both the House and Senate urging lawmakers to back the bill. “IAM Union strongly supports the Protect America’s Workforce Act for restoring collective bargaining rights to the nation’s federal workforce,” Bryant stated.
The push comes after an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on March 27 ended collective bargaining for federal unions. IAM describes this move as “an attack on civil servants and their rights as workers.”
According to IAM, federal employees play a key role in serving the public and should have access to collective bargaining protections that help ensure workplace safety and quality service delivery. The union represents thousands of federal workers, including those in its affiliate, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM), which covers about 110,000 federal employees across the country.
“IAM Union is a diverse labor union representing thousands of federal workers, including those represented by the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM), an affiliate representing approximately 110,000 federal workers across the U.S.,” Bryant added.
