Snap Inc. has announced Snap OS 2.0, an update to its operating system for Spectacles, the company’s augmented reality glasses. The new version introduces a redesigned interface and adds features intended to enhance user interaction and utility as the company prepares for the public launch of Specs in 2026.
The updated Spectacles Browser now offers improved speed and efficiency, according to Snap Inc., with a minimalist design that aims to streamline navigation. New features include a customizable home screen with widgets and bookmarks, an enhanced toolbar allowing users to type or speak URLs, navigate history, refresh pages, and resize windows similar to a laptop experience. The browser also now supports WebXR technology, which enables immersive augmented reality experiences directly from compatible websites.
A dedicated Spotlight Lens is being introduced as part of Snap OS 2.0. According to the company: “With the new dedicated Spotlight Lens, we’ve created a phone-free, larger-than-life experience that spatially overlays your favorite content onto the real world.”
The Gallery Lens will provide users with new ways to organize and share their captured moments using Spectacles. Users can scroll through videos in a carousel layout, zoom for more detail, organize favorites, and share content via Snapchat Stories or direct messages.
Another feature included is Travel Mode: “To make sure you can use Spectacles wherever life takes you, we’re also introducing Travel Mode. This new feature stabilizes AR content and tracking systems while you’re on the move – whether you’re on a plane, train, or sitting in the passenger seat of a car – ensuring your digital content stays anchored and stable.”
Snap Inc. reports ongoing engagement from developers around the world: “There are hundreds of developers from 30 countries developing Lenses for Spectacles. Some fan favorites include SightCraft by Enklu, NavigatAR by Utopia Labs, and Pool Assist by Studio ANRK, as well as Snap-made Lenses including Finger Paint, Chess and Imagine Together.”
These developments come as part of Snap’s broader effort to expand augmented reality applications through its hardware products.
