Snapchat’s AR Studio Paris has joined with historian and adventurer Bettany Hughes OBE and SandStone Global Productions to launch the series “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World with Bettany Hughes.” The program, airing on Channel 5 in the UK, features Hughes traveling across Greece, Egypt, and Turkey to revisit and examine the Seven Wonders.

The collaboration uses Snap’s augmented reality (AR) technology to allow viewers to experience ancient sites such as the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon from home. By scanning an on-screen QR code with their phones, viewers can explore these monuments virtually. The interactive AR experience enables users to visit moments in history and learn about each location.

“Airing on Channel 5 in the UK, the series follows Bettany Hughes OBE across three continents to investigate the Seven Wonders, traveling to ancient locations across Greece, Egypt, and Turkey to meticulously re-examine the 2,200-year-old ‘bucket list.’ By simply scanning an on-screen QR code with their phones, viewers will be able to virtually travel to moments in time to explore, learn, and see these sites. From traveling to Egypt’s Old Kingdom to check out the Giza Pyramids to seeing the beautiful Hanging Gardens of Babylon — people will be able to explore these awe-inspiring sites in Augmented Reality.”

The first episode is scheduled for August 2 at 6:30 pm BST on Channel 5 and will also be available weekly on My 5. For international audiences who cannot access Channel 5 or My 5 directly due to geographic restrictions or licensing agreements (https://www.sandstoneglobal.com/seven-wonders-ar), SandStone Global Productions offers online access for exploring each wonder through AR.
