Bitmoji, a feature used by more than 320 million people daily, is introducing a new option called Comic Bitmoji. The new style allows users to bring back the original 2D comic-inspired look for their avatars while keeping the customizable features of the current 3D platform.

In recent years, Bitmoji has expanded its presence within Snapchat and beyond, allowing users to personalize their digital identity through profiles, Snap Map, AR Lenses, stickers in chat, text messages, and email. In 2023, Bitmoji launched a 3D avatar with more customization options including different body types and hairstyles as well as detailed features like makeup and freckles.

Despite these updates, many users have expressed nostalgia for the earlier version of Bitmoji. According to the company, thousands of Snapchatters petitioned for the return of the classic 2D Comic style. “We listened,” stated Bitmoji in its announcement.

The Comic Bitmoji feature will be available to Snapchat+ subscribers in the coming days. This setting enables users to apply a filter that makes all avatars appear in 2D within their app and allows them to send stickers reflecting this style to friends. The company described it as “the same customization and expressions you love, reimagined to be reminiscent of that iconic comic-inspired look.”

“For Snapchatters, Bitmoji isn’t just an avatar. It’s your digital identity, the way you show up with friends, share your moods, and represent yourself online. With Comic Bitmoji, we’re giving you more choice in how you express yourself, whether that’s embracing the latest 3D styles or throwing it back to the look that started it all,” said a spokesperson from Bitmoji.
