President Donald Trump has proposed a significant increase in U.S. defense spending, calling for the 2027 military budget to reach $1.5 trillion. He cited “troubled and dangerous times” as the reason for this proposal, which would represent a substantial jump from the current 2026 military budget of $901 billion.
The announcement comes days after Trump ordered a U.S. military operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and bring him to the United States to face drug trafficking charges. U.S. forces are currently positioned in the Caribbean Sea as part of this ongoing effort.
In recent statements, Trump has also suggested acquiring Greenland from Denmark for national security purposes and indicated openness to potential military operations in Colombia. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently commented that Cuba “is in trouble,” further highlighting concerns about regional stability.
“This will allow us to build the ‘Dream Military’ that we have long been entitled to and, more importantly, that will keep us SAFE and SECURE, regardless of foe,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social announcing his proposal. He added that he feels comfortable increasing military spending due to higher revenue generated by tariffs imposed globally since his return to office.
Trump also addressed defense industry practices on Wednesday, threatening to halt Pentagon purchases from Raytheon unless the company stops stock buybacks and increases investment in weapons manufacturing capacity. He has criticized defense companies for delays in delivering critical weaponry while continuing stock buybacks and paying high executive salaries.
“Either Raytheon steps up, and starts investing in more upfront Investment like Plants and Equipment, or they will no longer be doing business with Department of War,” Trump stated on social media. “Also, if Raytheon wants further business with the United States Government, under no circumstances will they be allowed to do any additional Stock Buybacks, where they have spent Tens of Billions of Dollars, until they are able to get their act together.”
