The U.S. Census Bureau released new Business Formation Statistics for March 2026, according to an April 8 announcement. The data provide updated information on new business applications and formations in the United States and Puerto Rico.
The release of these statistics is significant because it offers timely insights into economic activity related to new businesses. Policymakers, researchers, and business leaders use this information to track trends in entrepreneurship and economic growth.
According to the Census Bureau, the Business Formation Statistics are developed through collaboration with economists from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame. The full dataset includes twelve series—four focused on applications and eight on formations—and is published monthly with breakdowns at national, regional, and state levels.
For Puerto Rico, four monthly business application series are included as part of each standard BFS product release. The data sets offer both seasonally adjusted and not seasonally adjusted figures.
There was no formal news release associated with this announcement; only a tip sheet was provided by the agency.
